Discover the legacy of Casimir Funk, the genius behind the concept of vitamins

Today’s Google Doodle shines a spotlight on Casimir Funk, the brilliant mind who coined the term “vitamins.” Born on February 23, 1884, Funk’s groundbreaking work revolutionised nutrition and health. He identified key nutrients essential for our well-being. His discovery of vitamins B1, B2, C, and D marked a major milestone in medical science.

Funk’s journey began in Poland. He was a keen and determined student, navigating through challenges with great passion. His curiosity led him to the University of Bern, Switzerland, where he earned his doctorate at just twenty.

His research went beyond vitamins. Funk also delved into hormones, adding to our understanding of the pituitary and sex glands. He stressed the balance between hormones and vitamins for health.

Despite facing prejudice as a Jewish student, Funk pursued his studies vigorously. His career took him to prestigious institutions, including the University of Berlin and the Pasteur Institute in Paris.

Funk’s personal life was as rich as his professional one. He was a dedicated family man, cherishing time with his loved ones amidst his scientific achievements.

Sadly, Funk passed away in 1967 in Albany, New York. Yet, his legacy lives on. Each vitamin pill we take is a testament to his contributions to health and science. Let’s remember Casimir Funk, a true pioneer in nutrition.
