A tragic collision near King’s College London leaves one woman dead and three others injured, as police continue investigations into the devastating crash

A horrific crash in central London has left a young woman dead and three others injured after a van struck pedestrians on the Strand. Police have arrested and later bailed a 26-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

The devastating incident unfolded at approximately 11:40 GMT on Tuesday, just steps away from King’s College London and Somerset House. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as the van veered onto the pavement, sending pedestrians sprawling.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene within minutes, but despite their efforts, a woman in her 20s succumbed to her injuries. Medics transported a 27-year-old woman to hospital, where she remains in a serious but non-life-threatening condition. A 23-year-old man, also hospitalised, has since been discharged.

The Metropolitan Police swiftly launched an investigation and confirmed that they did not believe the incident was terrorism-related.

Detective Chief Superintendent Christina Jessah commended bystanders who attempted to help the victims. “Members of the public displayed immense bravery as they fought to save this young woman’s life and assisted the injured. We urge people to avoid speculation about the circumstances, as this remains an active investigation.”

Authorities have since lifted road cordons, but police continue to liaise with King’s College London and other local institutions.

A spokesperson for the university acknowledged the tragedy, stating: “We are working closely with the emergency services following this deeply distressing event.” Meanwhile, the London Ambulance Service (LAS) detailed their response: “Our paramedics treated four people at the scene, but tragically, despite all efforts, one person was pronounced dead.”

As the investigation progresses, police urge witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the area at the time of the crash to come forward.
