Ending birth-shaming: dismantling the ‘natural’ birth cult for women’s well-being

Sienna Miller, currently expecting her second child, candidly discussed the pressure she faced surrounding childbirth, reflecting on her experience with her first daughter, Marlowe. In an interview with Vogue, the actor shared her initial desire for a ‘natural’ birth at home, accompanied by her sister as her doula. However, her plans took an unexpected turn, resulting in an emergency C-section at the hospital. Miller expressed feeling as though she had failed, believing her chosen birthing method was symbolic of the type of mother she aimed to be. She later recognized these sentiments as part of the challenges of early motherhood.

Miller’s narrative echoes the broader issue surrounding the societal expectation of a ‘natural’ birth, a concept deeply entrenched in the expectations placed upon women during childbirth. Studies, including a recent US research, reveal that a significant percentage of mothers who experience unplanned C-sections subsequently grapple with feelings of inadequacy.

The UK faced its own maternity care crisis with the alarming findings of the 2022 Ockenden review, exposing severe failures in maternity care in Shrewsbury and Telford. The report highlighted tragic outcomes, indicating potential preventable deaths due to substandard care. Additionally, recent investigations revealed that despite these distressing revelations, UK hospitals continue to advocate for a ‘natural birth is best’ approach, perpetuating a system riddled with medical misogyny and inadequate care, often jeopardizing the safety of mothers and their infants.

Personal testimonies, like Miller’s, underscore the pressure women face to conform to an idealized birthing process. I, too, experienced pressure during my own childbirth. Despite prior complications and instincts signaling otherwise, I was pushed toward a ‘natural’ birth. The result was a traumatic, prolonged labor without adequate pain relief and a series of distressing events that endangered my child’s life.

The misconception that a ‘natural’ birth signifies strength and resilience dismisses the diverse experiences and needs of women. It perpetuates harmful narratives, overshadowing the paramount importance of a safe and healthy birthing process for both mother and child.

In reality, the emphasis should be on a safe delivery, irrespective of the methods involved. Medical interventions can be life-saving and should not be stigmatized or avoided due to societal pressures. My own experience attests to this truth; a timely caesarean, albeit amidst agony, saved my child’s life.

Yet, society often downplays the trauma and challenges faced by women who undergo alternative birthing methods. The undue glorification of ‘natural’ birth overlooks the immense physical and emotional toll it can exact, leading to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and post-natal depression.

It’s time to discard the notion of a ‘natural’ birth as the epitome of motherhood and prioritize a woman’s well-being and safety during childbirth. The focus must shift towards supportive, ethical practices that ensure the health of both mother and child. Let’s create a world where childbirth is not bound by societal constructs but centered on compassion and safety, where every mother and child can thrive without being shackled by outdated expectations.
