Elon Musk says he and Trump have ‘mandate to delete’ regulations, but ethics laws could limit his role

President-elect Trump’s appointment of Musk to cut federal regulations faces scrutiny due to Musk’s vast business interests and potential conflicts of interest

Elon Musk’s role in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration, particularly in the area of cutting federal regulations, is raising ethical concerns due to the billionaire’s extensive business empire and political involvement. Musk, who holds influential positions at SpaceX, Tesla, X (formerly Twitter), and other ventures, has been named as a key figure to spearhead efforts to reduce government red tape.

The idea of enlisting a business tycoon to overhaul the U.S. regulatory landscape is not new. President Ronald Reagan appointed J. Peter Grace in 1982 to lead a similar initiative. However, Musk’s situation is unique. As the world’s richest individual with billions in government contracts, his business dealings could present significant conflicts of interest. SpaceX, for instance, holds multi-billion-dollar NASA contracts, while Tesla benefits from federal tax incentives for electric vehicles. Musk’s social media platform, X, and his other ventures like Neuralink and The Boring Company, all intersect with the government, further complicating matters.

Ethics experts are voicing concerns about Musk’s potential influence over regulations that directly impact his businesses. Ann Skeet, director of leadership ethics at Santa Clara University’s Markkula Center, pointed out that Musk now finds himself in a position where his actions could benefit his various companies, raising questions about potential self-dealing. “There are direct conflicts between his businesses and government’s interests,” Skeet said. “He’s now in a position to try and curry favor for those enterprises.”

Musk’s political clout is also notable, having spent an estimated $200 million through his political action committee to help elect Trump. Additionally, he has established himself as a close ally to Trump, regularly attending events at Mar-a-Lago and maintaining relationships with like-minded global leaders such as Argentina’s President Javier Milei and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Despite these concerns, Musk has argued that he and Trump have a “mandate” to eliminate regulations that they believe hinder business growth and innovation. While Musk’s proposed role in reducing red tape could have wide-reaching implications, questions about ethics and potential conflicts of interest could limit his ability to fully carry out the task.

As the new administration takes shape, the issue of balancing regulatory reform with ethical considerations will likely remain a key point of contention, particularly as Musk’s business ventures continue to thrive with significant government involvement.
