Three critical signs may indicate a more serious underlying condition—don’t ignore your symptoms.

As autumn brings cooler temperatures and indoor heating, many people are experiencing the discomfort of dry eyes. While over-the-counter eye drops can provide relief, persistent dry eyes can sometimes signal a more serious health issue. It’s essential to remain vigilant about accompanying symptoms that warrant a visit to your GP.

Dr Stuart Sanders, a GP at The London General Practice, has shared crucial insights about when dry eyes could indicate a potentially serious condition, such as a brain tumour. “Dry eyes can be a sign of a brain tumour,” he noted, explaining that the pressure from a tumour behind the eye or interference with the blinking process may lead to this irritation. However, he reassures that additional symptoms associated with a brain tumour usually present themselves earlier.

If you find yourself suffering from dry eyes, pay close attention to the following three signs that should prompt you to seek medical advice:

  1. Changes in Eye Movements: If you notice unusual or erratic movements in your eyes, it could indicate a problem that needs to be assessed by a medical professional. This can include difficulties in tracking objects or experiencing sudden changes in your eye coordination.
  2. Continuous Headaches: Persistent headaches, particularly if they are new or different from your usual headache pattern, can be a red flag. If you’re experiencing ongoing headaches alongside your dry eyes, it’s crucial to consult with your GP.
  3. Alterations in Vision or Movement: Any noticeable changes in your vision—such as blurriness, double vision, or difficulties in focusing—should not be ignored. Additionally, if you experience problems with balance or coordination, these symptoms warrant immediate medical attention.

The onset of dry eyes, particularly when paired with these concerning signs, may indicate an underlying health issue that requires further investigation. It’s essential to take your symptoms seriously and seek a professional assessment if you notice any of these warning signs.

While seasonal changes can lead to increased dry eye symptoms due to environmental factors, understanding the potential implications of your symptoms can help ensure that you receive timely care.

With the onset of colder months, remember that maintaining eye health is paramount. If you’re unsure or concerned about your dry eyes and any accompanying symptoms, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance.
