Former Eastenders star Don Gilet is set to bring a fresh face to BBC’s beloved detective series, “Death in Paradise,” starting this Christmas

In a delightful turn of events for fans of BBC’s “Death in Paradise,” Don Gilet, known for his role as the notorious Lucas Johnson in “EastEnders,” has been announced as the new lead detective of the sun-soaked drama. Gilet is slated to debut as Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson in the show’s upcoming Christmas special, marking a significant transition from his previous dark roles to the light-hearted detective series set in the picturesque Saint Marie.

Gilet’s casting follows the departure of Ralf Little, who played DI Neville Parker, and he will be the show’s fifth lead detective. The series, which consistently ranks as one of the UK’s most-watched dramas, is gearing up for its 14th series, anticipated to premiere in 2025 on BBC One. Reflecting on his new role, Gilet expressed his excitement and gratitude, noting, “Being offered the new lead role in Death in Paradise feels like a deeply loved and incredibly precious jewel has been placed in my hands.”

The actor has already started filming in Guadeloupe, embracing the challenges and charms of his new role, even joking about the “testing times” on set that tempt him to escape into the surrounding tropical paradise. DI Wilson, Gilet’s character, arrives in Saint Marie from London and is initially displeased with his new surroundings, setting the stage for intriguing developments and character arcs in the upcoming series.

“Death in Paradise” has not only captivated audiences with its engaging plotlines and scenic backdrops but has also expanded its universe with spin-offs such as “Beyond Paradise” and the recently announced “Return to Paradise,” set in Australia. The show’s global appeal is evident, with it being licensed in over 230 territories.

As Gilet steps into the shoes previously filled by Ben Miller, Kris Marshall, Ardal O’Hanlon, and Ralf Little, fans are eager to see how he will interpret the role of DI Wilson and integrate into the dynamic of Saint Marie. His transition from villain to hero marks a promising new chapter for both Gilet and “Death in Paradise,” promising more intriguing mysteries and entertaining escapades under the Caribbean sun.
