Disney’s new ‘Snow White’ trailer sparks outrage: I’d walk out even on a plane

Fans slam the latest trailer for Disney’s live-action musical, with many criticising its take on the beloved classic.

The latest trailer for Disney’s live-action Snow White has been met with widespread criticism from fans, sparking a wave of negative reactions across social media. Released on December 5, the trailer, which builds on the first teaser launched in August, has intensified the backlash, with viewers voicing their discontent over the film’s direction.

Directed by Marc Webb, the new Snow White movie is a musical reimagining of Disney’s 1937 animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The film stars Rachel Zegler, known for her role in West Side Story, as Snow White, while Gal Gadot takes on the role of the Evil Queen. The movie also features original songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who are known for their work on La La Land and The Greatest Showman.

However, despite the star-studded cast and musical elements, the response from viewers has been overwhelmingly negative. On YouTube, the comments section was flooded with harsh critiques, with some fans expressing their frustration with the film’s portrayal of the iconic fairytale.

One user commented, “If I saw this movie on a plane, I would still walk out,” capturing the sentiment of many who feel the film misses the mark. Another fan wrote, “Can’t wait to see this film bomb spectacularly,” while others expressed their disapproval more humourously, rooting for the Evil Queen over Snow White. “I want the queen to win in this version,” one user quipped, reflecting a general feeling of disappointment with the protagonist’s characterisation.

Perhaps the most biting comment came from a fan who jokingly supported the poisoned apple, a central plot point in the film. “Nobody has ever rooted for a poison apple until this movie! GO APPLE GO!!!” they wrote, highlighting the disdain for Snow White’s character and the film’s overall tone.

The backlash seems to be driven by multiple factors, including the modernised take on the classic tale, as well as concerns about the direction of Disney’s live-action remakes. Critics of the trailer argue that the film strays too far from the original, offering a watered-down version of a beloved fairytale that is being “over-polished” for modern audiences. For some, the updates feel more like forced political correctness than a meaningful reimagining.

While some remain hopeful that the final product will exceed the low expectations set by the trailer, many are left feeling disillusioned with Disney’s ongoing trend of remaking animated classics into live-action musicals. The backlash against Snow White is part of a broader trend of dissatisfaction with Disney’s recent output, especially when it comes to reviving their animated classics with live-action versions.

The film, slated for release in 2025, has yet to prove whether it can win over its critics, but based on the reaction to the latest trailer, it faces an uphill battle to win back the trust of fans who feel the magic of the original is being lost in translation. As the release date approaches, it seems that Disney’s Snow White has more than just an Evil Queen to contend with—its own audience.
