A fatal climbing accident on Mount Johnson in Alaska’s Denali National Park results in the death of a New York climber and leaves her partner injured
In a tragic incident at Denali National Park, Alaska, one climber lost her life and another was seriously injured after a fall from Mount Johnson. The accident occurred late Thursday evening, involving a two-person team attempting to ascend a challenging route known as “the Escalator” on the 8,400-foot peak.
The climber who perished in the fall was identified as 52-year-old Robbi Mecus from Keene Valley, New York. Her climbing partner, a 30-year-old woman from California, survived the ordeal but sustained serious injuries. The two were roped together, navigating a steep climb composed of mixed rock, ice, and snow when the tragic fall of approximately 1,000 feet took place.
Witnesses to the accident were another climbing party on Mount Johnson, who immediately alerted park rangers and descended to assist the fallen climbers. Due to their efforts, the injured climber was kept warm overnight in a hastily constructed snow cave while awaiting rescue.
Rescue operations commenced the following morning, executed by Denali’s high-altitude helicopter pilot and two mountaineering rangers using a short-haul rescue technique. The surviving climber was subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Anchorage, though her current condition remains undisclosed.
Robbi Mecus, the climber who died, was a respected forest ranger with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Adirondack region, having served for 25 years. Interim DEC Commissioner Sean Mahar expressed his condolences, recognizing Mecus for her passion, courage, and dedicated service.
Efforts to recover Mecus’s body were initially hampered by adverse weather conditions but were successfully completed on Saturday when the weather cleared. The incident has cast a sombre tone on the climbing community and highlighted the inherent risks associated with mountain climbing.
Denali National Park Superintendent Brooke Merrell extended thoughts and condolences to the friends and family of Robbi Mecus, acknowledging the swift actions of the rescue teams and the mountaineers who assisted on the scene.
