Delivery driver Jay, known by his TikTok handle @downtownhustle, has become a viral sensation for his unconventional approach to maximizing tips during his weekend side hustle with DoorDash and Uber Eats.

Jay, who delivers food and services for approximately ten hours a week, shared his strategy on TikTok, boasting 150,000 followers. Despite not revealing his face on camera, his account has gained popularity for showcasing his unique delivery tactics.

The driver candidly admits to declining around 75% of orders, focusing only on those with the highest up-front tips. In an interview with Insider, Jay explained that he hangs around on his bike in wealthy neighborhoods where larger tips are promised. His strategy revolves around avoiding orders with low tips and prioritizing those with substantial up-front gratuities.

DoorDash and Uber Eats provide a base payment determined by factors such as distance and inconvenience fees, in addition to any up-front tips. Jay emphasized that he is not interested in gambling on potential tips upon delivery and prefers orders with guaranteed higher earnings.

Payments for orders can range from $2 to $4.50, and Jay stresses the importance of customers tipping for the premium service they receive. He argues that tipping ensures timely and efficient delivery service.
