Emphasizes global guidelines and watermarks on AI-generated content to combat misinformation.

In a recent discussion with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the emerging threats posed by deepfake technology. The conversation, taking place at the Prime Minister’s residence, revolved around the critical need for global guidelines and preventive measures to safeguard against the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in today’s technologically advanced landscape.

PM Modi pointed out the particular danger of deepfakes, which can manipulate voices or images to create misleading content. He stressed the importance of making the public aware of AI-generated content through the initial use of watermarks, thereby preventing misinformation. “In a vast democratic country like India, the misuse of deepfake technology, for example, misusing my voice, can initially deceive people, leading to widespread chaos,” PM Modi expressed, emphasizing the need for clear identification of AI-generated content and its sources.

The Prime Minister advocated for a cautious approach to AI integration, suggesting that its application should be confined to areas of expertise to avoid overutilization and potential misuse. He shared insights from his engagements with leading AI experts, reinforcing the idea of using watermarks on AI content as a starting point to counter misinformation.

On data security, PM Modi discussed the measures India has taken, including storing university certificates in the cloud to enhance efficiency and reduce costs. He underscored the importance of simplifying data management, advocating for cloud technology to improve direct access to necessary information, thereby enhancing citizen services and living standards.

The dialogue between PM Modi and Bill Gates sheds light on the significant challenges and opportunities AI presents. It underscores the urgent need for global cooperation in establishing guidelines that ensure AI’s ethical use, safeguarding against its potential for misinformation and misuse, particularly through the threat of deepfakes.
