Death row inmate’s last meal mistake leads to ‘excruciating’ execution

Expert claims Wesley Ira Purkey suffered unbearable pain during lethal injection

Wesley Ira Purkey, a death row inmate convicted in 2004 for the horrifying kidnapping, rape, and murder of 16-year-old Jennifer Long, faced a disturbing fate during his execution by lethal injection. Purkey, who suffered from dementia at the age of 68 during his execution in 2020, made a critical error with his last meal, leading an expert to assert that the administered drugs would have caused excruciating pain.
Long, the victim, disappeared in 1998 after being lured into Purkey’s car. The subsequent investigation revealed the gruesome details of her murder, involving stabbing, dismemberment with a chainsaw, burning the body, and disposing of the remains in a septic pond. The killer’s actions extended to the murder of 80-year-old Mary Bales, whom he beat with a claw hammer.
When Purkey’s execution day arrived, his request for pecan pie as his last meal took an unexpected turn. Seemingly unaware of his fate, he requested to save the pie for later, raising questions about his comprehension of the impending lethal injection.
Dr. Gail Van Norman, a medical expert, has since asserted that Purkey likely experienced an ‘excruciating’ death rather than the intended painless passing. The autopsy revealed severe acute pulmonary edema and frothy pulmonary edema in the trachea and bronchi, indicative of a near-drowning experience.
Van Norman emphasized that the filling of Purkey’s lungs with fluid could only have occurred while he was still alive. Describing it as a ‘virtual medical certainty,’ Van Norman stated, “most, if not all, prisoners will experience excruciating suffering, including sensations of drowning and suffocation” from the lethal injection drug, pentobarbital.
Purkey, moments before his execution, appeared to express remorse for his actions, saying, “I deeply regret the pain and suffering I caused to Jennifer’s family… This sanitized murder really does not serve no purpose whatsoever.” However, the painful nature of his execution has sparked concerns about the ethics and humanity of lethal injection as a method of capital punishment.
