Valencia appoints Carlos Corberan as new head coach, securing him with a deal until 2027
La Liga’s struggling Valencia have made a bold move to secure their future by appointing Carlos Corberan as their new head coach. The 41-year-old Spaniard, who had been in charge of West Bromwich Albion, joins the club after the dismissal of Ruben Baraja, who led Valencia to only two wins in 17 league matches this season.
Corberan’s release clause, reported to be between £3-4 million, was paid by Valencia, making the Spaniard the new leader of the club. The former Huddersfield Town manager has signed a deal that will keep him at Valencia until the end of the 2026-27 season. This marks a significant step for Corberan, who has previously impressed with his managerial skills in England, especially after guiding West Brom to a solid performance in the Championship.
Despite a reduced budget, Corberan led West Brom to a seventh-place position in the Championship this season, just outside the play-off spots. His first season at the Baggies saw them finish ninth, followed by a fifth-place finish last year, where they narrowly missed out on promotion after losing in the play-off semi-finals. Corberan’s work at West Brom earned him widespread respect, but now he faces the challenge of reviving a Valencia side sitting second-bottom in La Liga, four points adrift from safety.

While Valencia’s immediate future looks uncertain, Corberan has the task of turning around their fortunes. His first challenge will be a tough encounter against reigning champions Real Madrid on January 3, just days after he officially takes charge. The team’s struggles under Baraja, who was let go following a string of poor performances, have left Valencia in a precarious position.
Corberan’s appointment comes after speculation linking him with other managerial roles, including the vacant position at Premier League side Southampton, which ultimately went to Ivan Juric. Valencia’s gamble on Corberan highlights their belief in his ability to turn things around and restore the club to its former glory.
