A 19 year old man was killed in Bury on Monday night in what police described as a targeted vehicle attack

A murder investigation is under way in Bury after a 19-year-old man was killed in a suspected targeted vehicle attack. Greater Manchester Police arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of murder following the fatal incident on Monday evening.

Emergency services were called to Porritt Street in the town shortly before midnight, responding to reports of a serious collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian. Officers arriving at the scene found the teenager lying critically injured in the road.

Despite efforts from paramedics and emergency responders, the victim died from his injuries. The police have not yet publicly identified the deceased, but say his next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

At approximately 2am on Tuesday, officers arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody for questioning as detectives piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Detective Superintendent Wesley Knights, leading the investigation, expressed condolences to the family and stressed that the killing appears to have been intentional.

“Firstly, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time,” he said. “This is a truly tragic incident which has seen a young man lose his life. I would like to reassure the public that this is a targeted attack and there is no wider threat to the community.”

The area around Porritt Street was sealed off overnight, with forensic teams scouring the scene and uniformed officers conducting door-to-door enquiries. Police have also increased their presence in the neighbourhood, promising a visible patrol to help reassure residents and assist in the ongoing investigation.

Locals reported being woken by flashing blue lights and a large police presence late on Monday. One resident, who declined to be named, said, “I saw the ambulance and the police turn up around the corner and realised something serious had happened. It’s heartbreaking to think a young lad’s lost his life like this.”

Another neighbour added, “There’s often trouble around here, but nothing like this. The police have been here all night. We just want to know what happened and why.”

Greater Manchester Police said detectives are keeping an open mind but are currently treating the killing as a deliberate act of violence involving a vehicle. They have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has dashcam, doorbell, or CCTV footage from the area around Porritt Street on Monday evening to come forward.

“This investigation is moving quickly,” added Detective Superintendent Knights. “But we still need the help of the public. If you saw anything suspicious, no matter how minor it may seem, please get in touch.”

The murder has shocked the local community, prompting calls for more safety measures in the area and renewed concerns about escalating violence involving vehicles.

Police are expected to remain on the scene throughout Tuesday as enquiries continue. The arrested man has not yet been charged, and police say updates will follow as the investigation develops.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Greater Manchester Police or report anonymously via Crimestoppers.
