Aneliya Tihomirova Lazar Ova, who passed away last June after battling acute myeloid leukaemia, left a touching legacy of compassion

In a poignant display of selflessness, 12-year-old Aneliya Tihomirova Lazarova, known as Annie, showed remarkable bravery and compassion as she faced the devastating effects of acute myeloid leukaemia. Despite her own suffering, Annie thought of others and prayed for fellow sick children while she was a patient at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Annie’s journey with cancer began in 2022 when she was diagnosed with the aggressive disease. Despite undergoing treatment and a bone marrow transplant in September of that year, her condition continued to worsen, leading to a series of critical illnesses, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), myopathy, sepsis, and multi-organ failure.

An inquest into Annie’s death, held at Manchester Coroner’s Court, revealed the extent of her medical challenges and the impact of her treatment on her young body. Despite the hardships she faced, Annie’s father, Tiho Lazarov, described her as a “true hero” and an “inspiration.”

Speaking after the inquest, Tiho Lazarov shared how Annie’s compassion extended beyond her own pain. He recounted how she would pray for other children in the hospital, showing kindness and empathy that touched everyone around her.

Annie’s family, from Middleton, remembered her as a bright and talented child with interests in music, arts, sports, and academics. She dreamed of becoming a doctor and a singer, reflecting her desire to help others and create a better future.
