Book donations enrich school library, fostering love for reading

Contributions from local businesses and authors elevate the literary experience

Charlton School in Telford has seen its library flourish with a diverse range of books, thanks to generous donations from local businesses and renowned authors. The initiative, sparked by the school’s Big Reads project, aims to broaden students’ literary horizons and create an inviting space for reading and learning.

Initiating Change:

About a year ago, Charlton School invited students to submit a wish list of books to enhance its library’s collection. Lindsay Galbraith, assistant vice principal, emphasized the importance of providing students with access to a wide array of reading materials.

Community Support:

Local businesses responded enthusiastically to the school’s appeal, generously fulfilling the wish list and providing an assortment of captivating books. Sarah Cox, the teacher in charge of literacy, expressed gratitude for the community’s support, which resulted in the acquisition of “wonderful books” for the library.

Student Response:

Students at Charlton School welcomed the expanded collection with enthusiasm. Cassie, a Year 10 student, praised the support from local businesses, acknowledging the positive impact on the school’s library.

Promoting Literacy:

Galbraith highlighted the significance of a well-stocked library, particularly in disadvantaged areas where access to books may be limited. The fully stocked shelves aim to promote literacy, academic achievement, and intellectual curiosity among students.

Creating a Welcoming Environment:

Efforts to enhance the library’s appeal included adding color and creating a comfortable space for students to relax and read. Ellie, a school librarian, emphasized the importance of providing a safe and inviting environment that encourages students to engage with books.

Author Contributions:

In addition to donations from local businesses, Charlton School received contributions from renowned authors, adding a special touch to the library’s collection. Authors such as Jewell Parker Rhodes, Diana Anyakwo, Ravena Guron, Tess James–Mackey, and Louie Stowell enriched the school’s literary offerings.

Fostering a Love for Reading:

The revitalized library space has become a favourite spot for students like Charlie, who find solace and inspiration among the books. The school hopes that the enriched library will foster a lifelong love for reading and learning among its students.
