Neighbour charged with murder after missing woman’s body discovered in her Bolton home
In a Bolton murder investigation, police have charged a man with murder following the discovery of Mariann Borocz’s body in a house on Pedder Street. The 54-year-old had been reported missing on December 14, leading to a nine-day search before her body was found on December 23.
Christopher Barlow, 61, who resides on the same street, has been accused of her murder and remains in custody. He is scheduled to appear before Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, December 26. The discovery has shaken the local community, with shocked neighbours expressing disbelief that such a tragedy unfolded in their midst.
Detective Chief Inspector Tony Platten, leading the investigation for Greater Manchester Police, extended his condolences to Mariann’s grieving family. “We are working tirelessly to piece together a timeline of events leading up to Mariann’s death,” he said. “Her family are understandably devastated, and our thoughts remain with them during this incredibly difficult time.”
The case has taken a grim turn, with police appealing to the public for any additional information that could shed light on the events leading to Mariann’s death. Residents of Pedder Street have been urged to come forward if they noticed anything unusual in recent weeks.

Neighbours described Mariann as a kind and quiet woman who kept to herself but was always polite to those around her. “I can’t believe it,” said one local resident, visibly distressed. “We all saw the police coming and going for days, but we never imagined this.”
The murder charge has sent shockwaves through the community, particularly given its proximity to Christmas. “It’s terrifying to think something so horrible could happen right next door,” another neighbour remarked.
Detectives have set up a hotline for tips and continue to seek any information related to the case. DCI Platten added, “If you have seen or heard anything suspicious, no matter how small, please contact us. Your information could be critical to solving this case.”
As Mariann’s family copes with their devastating loss, the Bolton murder investigation continues. Christopher Barlow’s upcoming court appearance is anticipated to shed light on the events leading to this tragic and chilling case.
