VR revolution: Bigscreen Beyond 2 slashes weight and boosts clarity

Bigscreen Beyond 2 pushes VR technology forward with sharper lenses, a new IPD system, and a lighter design

Bigscreen Beyond, already the world’s smallest and lightest VR headset, now has a successor that further refines its revolutionary design. Bigscreen Beyond 2 reduces weight, enhances visual clarity, and introduces a new interpupillary distance (IPD) system for a more customisable fit. Weighing just 107 grams, it is now 16% lighter than the original, making it the lightest VR headset ever made. However, it remains a PC VR-exclusive device, requiring a tethered cable and external SteamVR tracking boxes.

The biggest upgrade comes in the form of high-quality pancake lenses, which offer a larger field of view, higher edge-to-edge clarity, and less glare. Bigscreen claims the improvements bring it closer to the performance of Meta’s Quest 3 while maintaining increased brightness. Despite these enhancements, the display technology remains the same. The headset still features dual micro-OLED screens with a resolution of 2,560 x 2,560 pixels per eye. Full resolution is achieved only at a 75 Hz refresh rate, while the 90 Hz mode renders a lower resolution before upscaling.

The IPD system has also been redesigned. Unlike its predecessor, which required a fixed personal IPD setting, Beyond 2 allows users to adjust each lens separately using a small tool. This offers more flexibility for users who need precise customisation.

The headset retains its custom-fit face pad, which requires an iPhone scan for a perfect match. However, Bigscreen has announced the upcoming Halo Mount accessory, expected in Q3 2025. Inspired by military night-vision goggles, this mount removes the need for a face scan. Users will have the option to wear the headset with a universal-fit light shield or without any face pad at all. The Halo Mount will be compatible with both the standard head strap and the optional Audio Strap.

With its lighter frame, improved optics, and adjustable IPD system, Bigscreen Beyond 2 is an incremental but significant step forward in VR hardware. However, as a PC-tethered device requiring external tracking, it remains a niche product for dedicated enthusiasts. The evolution of VR will depend on how quickly PC VR can adapt to demand, but Beyond 2’s compact form factor proves that immersive experiences can come in ever-smaller packages.
