In a tragic turn of events, Lancashire Police is grappling with the sudden loss of Assistant Chief Constable Peter Lawson, a figure widely recognized for his commendable role in the investigation of Nicola Bulley’s disappearance earlier this year. The 50-year-old officer, described as “highly respected and admired,” passed away at his home, leaving colleagues and the entire community in shock.

The circumstances surrounding Peter Lawson’s death are believed to be “medical-related,” as confirmed by Lancashire Constabulary. Chief Constable Chris Rowley expressed profound sadness, stating, “This is incredibly sad and tragic news. My thoughts and prayers are with all of Pete’s family and friends at this difficult time.” He emphasized Lawson’s outstanding service to the communities of Lancashire and the wider police family across the country.

Peter Lawson’s career trajectory was marked by dedication and rapid ascension through the ranks. Having commenced his career in Preston, he earned admiration not only within Lancashire but also nationally. His pivotal role in high-profile events, including press conferences during the search for Nicola Bulley, showcased his commitment to duty.

Nicola Bulley’s tragic case reached its somber conclusion when her body was discovered in the River Wyre on February 19, not far from where she disappeared while walking her dog in St Michael’s on Wyre. Peter Lawson’s involvement extended beyond this case, as he provided crucial evidence to the Manchester Arena terror attack inquiry, further solidifying his reputation as a respected law enforcement figure.

Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Andrew Snowden paid tribute, stating, “ACC Lawson represented the very best of policing. He embodied the values of service, duty, and integrity.” Snowden expressed his deep appreciation for Lawson’s intellect, insight, and calming presence.

The heartfelt tributes extended beyond the police force, with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service’s chief fire officer, Justin Johnson, expressing condolences. Johnson said, “Awful news. All of our thoughts are with Pete’s family, friends, and colleagues at this incredibly difficult time.”

Peter Lawson’s untimely death follows a recent report criticizing Lancashire police for the disclosure of “highly sensitive” personal information about Nicola Bulley. The review, led by the College of Policing, cited “insufficient focus” and errors of judgment, recommending improvements in the handling of such information.
