The Marvel star reflects on how leaving Hollywood slowed his career but gave him peace of mind

Anthony Mackie has no regrets about leaving Hollywood behind. The Captain America: Brave New World star, 46, made the life-changing decision to move back to his hometown of New Orleans in 2008, seeking a quieter, more fulfilling life away from the entertainment industry’s relentless grind.

In a candid interview with Esquire, Mackie revealed that his desire to return home was sparked by something simple yet profound—a day spent fishing with friends and playing golf with his uncle. That moment of clarity led him to turn his back on Hollywood’s chaos, even though he knew it would slow his career.

“Moving to New Orleans slowed my career in a way,” Mackie admitted. “But it also gave me the peace of mind and the confidence, being outside of the business, that I can bring a natural humanity into my roles.”

Despite stepping away from Hollywood’s epicentre, the actor has continued working steadily. His 2023 Netflix thriller We Have a Ghost and the Peacock series Twisted Metal were both filmed in New Orleans, proving that success doesn’t have to mean living in Los Angeles.

Mackie’s Twisted Metal co-star Stephanie Beatriz praised his dedication to the city, noting that his love for New Orleans was evident on set. “Anthony is a real caretaker on set. He is constantly checking in on the crew,” she shared.

Beyond his career, Mackie is a devoted father to four sons, whom he shares with his ex-wife Sheletta Chapital. His commitment to family played a significant role in his decision to leave Hollywood, allowing him to raise his children in the city he calls home.

Fans can next see Mackie reprise his role as Captain America in Captain America: Brave New World, set to hit theatres on Friday, February 14.
