Prime Minister responds to China’s accusation of Australian military provocation in Yellow Sea
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed China’s accusation that Australia’s military caused “trouble” after Chinese jets dropped flares near an ADF helicopter over the weekend. Speaking at ‘Breakfast with the Prime Minister’ in Perth, Mr. Albanese navigated the delicate situation with caution.
China’s foreign ministry claimed that Chinese jets reacted to Australian provocations by dropping flares near an Australian Seahawk helicopter operating in the Yellow Sea. Despite being in international airspace and enforcing sanctions against North Korea, Australia was accused of endangering China’s maritime and air security.

“We’re in international waters, international airspace, upholding international law through the UN sanctions,” Mr. Albanese stated.
When asked if he believed Australia’s military was “causing trouble,” Mr. Albanese responded in the negative, emphasizing the importance of safety for ADF personnel.
“We raise these things through appropriate channels at every opportunity,” he added, distancing himself from plans to address the incident during Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s visit next month.
Australia’s Defence Force expects all countries, including China, to operate their militaries safely and professionally, emphasizing its right to freedom of navigation and overflight in international waters and airspace.
