The new ALVR v20.9.1 release brings improved audio support on Linux, enabling seamless VR game streaming via wi-fi
ALVR (Air Light VR), a promising tool for streaming VR games to headsets via Wi-Fi, has taken a significant step forward with its latest release, v20.9.1. This update brings substantial improvements to the Linux platform, particularly in audio support, making the VR experience more accessible and efficient for Linux users.
Despite some ongoing challenges with SteamVR on Linux, ALVR continues to push the envelope. The inclusion of PipeWire support in this update marks a major milestone. PipeWire, a modern multimedia framework, allows ALVR to offer robust out-of-the-box audio functionality on Linux, eliminating the need for any additional external software. This advancement positions Linux not only on par with but potentially ahead of Windows in terms of support for VR game streaming.

Finally, now audio works out of the box on Linux without the need for any external software except the PipeWire system package. This puts Linux on par, if not on better support status, than Windows!”
The update also brings several other enhancements and fixes. Here’s a detailed look at the changes introduced in v20.9.1:
Changes for v20.9.1:
- Performance issues in the lobby room have been fixed, ensuring smoother user experiences.
Changes for v20.9.0:
- PipeWire support has been added on Linux, enabling ALVR to create its own input and output devices. Consequently, the old ALSA and Jack backends have been removed.
- A new launcher has been introduced, enhancing ease of use.
- GPU checks for Linux have been added to ensure optimal performance.
- Numerous tweaks to the dashboard provide a more intuitive and user-friendly interface.
- Hands and controllers are now visible in the lobby, adding to the immersive experience.
- Recentering in the lobby is now possible, improving the functionality and flexibility of the VR environment.
- Controller detection issues on the Pico Neo 3 Link have been resolved.
- A fix for the HEVC black screen on Linux/VAAPI has been implemented.
- Restrictions on device selection with VoiceMeeter have been loosened, offering more customization options.
- Extensive documentation changes and internal refactorings have been carried out, thanks to contributions from several developers.
In addition to these improvements, ALVR has also made its debut on Meta AppLab and will soon be available on PICO Lab, expanding its reach and accessibility.
This release is a significant leap for Linux users who wish to stream VR games wirelessly, enhancing both the functionality and ease of use of ALVR.
Analysis:
Political: The inclusion of PipeWire support in ALVR for Linux demonstrates the growing recognition and importance of open-source software in mainstream technology. This aligns with the broader political movement advocating for open-source solutions, which promote transparency, security, and community-driven development. The enhanced support for Linux can be seen as a win for the open-source community, potentially influencing policy discussions around software development and technology standards.
Social: ALVR’s advancements in VR streaming on Linux reflect broader societal shifts towards inclusivity and accessibility in technology. By improving support for Linux, ALVR is catering to a diverse user base that values open-source solutions and the freedom to customize their software environments. This move encourages a more inclusive approach to technology development, promoting equal access to advanced VR experiences regardless of the operating system.
Racial: While the technical improvements in ALVR do not directly address racial issues, the inclusive philosophy of open-source software development fosters a global community where contributions come from diverse backgrounds. The enhanced support for Linux, a platform popular among developers worldwide, can indirectly support diversity by enabling more people from different regions and communities to participate in and benefit from advanced VR technology.
Gender: The VR industry, like many tech sectors, has faced challenges related to gender diversity. ALVR’s commitment to enhancing its platform on Linux and collaborating with a wide range of developers can help create an environment that encourages more participation from women and non-binary individuals in VR development. Inclusive tools like ALVR on open platforms can lower barriers to entry, promoting greater gender diversity in the tech and gaming industries.
Economical: Economically, ALVR’s improvements can drive greater adoption of VR technology on Linux, potentially boosting the market for VR hardware and software. The enhanced functionality and ease of use may attract more users to invest in VR headsets and compatible devices, stimulating economic activity in the VR sector. Additionally, by supporting a wider range of operating systems, ALVR positions itself as a versatile solution, appealing to a broader customer base and potentially increasing its market share.
