The actress addresses retirement speculation and opens up about her unconventional path
Alexa Demie has firmly dismissed rumours that she plans to walk away from acting after the conclusion of Euphoria, ending months of speculation that spread across social media and fan communities.
The actress, best known for portraying Maddy Perez in HBO’s hit drama, addressed claims that she intended to retire from Hollywood following the show’s final season. The rumours stemmed from comments she made during a 2020 podcast appearance, where she reflected on the frustrations she faced early in her career and questioned whether opportunities truly existed for Latina actresses in the industry.
Demie said those comments were made during a difficult period when she frequently encountered casting calls that excluded Hispanic backgrounds from consideration. Although she sometimes felt discouraged, she insisted she never seriously intended to quit.
Instead, she channelled that frustration into determination.
Growing up in Los Angeles, Demie viewed Hollywood as something close enough to see, yet distant enough to feel inaccessible. Raised primarily by her mother, she spent her early years juggling various jobs and searching for financial independence before eventually finding her way into acting.
Her route into the industry was anything but traditional. Before securing professional acting roles, she worked in retail, served as a receptionist, assisted stylists and even designed sunglasses. A friend’s short film eventually introduced her to people working within the entertainment business and encouraged her to pursue acting more seriously.
Several smaller roles followed, including appearances in independent films and television projects. Yet Demie said she still felt she had not found the breakthrough she was searching for.
That changed when Euphoria arrived.
The actress revealed that she originally auditioned for the role of Rue before being called back to read for Maddy. While series creator Sam Levinson immediately believed she was right for the character, Demie faced resistance during the casting process.
According to Levinson, some executives initially envisioned the role differently. Despite those concerns, Demie ultimately secured the part after a final audition that left a lasting impression.
Her portrayal of Maddy quickly became one of the most recognisable performances in the series. The character’s confidence, attitude and emotional complexity helped transform Demie into a fan favourite and one of the show’s breakout stars.
Yet while many of her co-stars expanded their public profiles through frequent interviews and high-profile projects, Demie took a different approach.
She largely stepped away from public attention and embraced a quieter lifestyle. Friends and colleagues describe her as someone who values privacy over celebrity culture, a choice that only added to the intrigue surrounding her public image.
Following the second season of Euphoria, Demie experienced a particularly challenging period. The demanding production schedule and emotionally intense storylines left her exhausted. She admitted that she struggled to separate herself from her character and needed time to recover.
Seeking balance, she retreated into a more reflective routine centred around meditation, journalling and personal growth. She also explored therapy and other activities that helped her reconnect with herself away from the spotlight.
When scripts for the third and final season arrived, Demie said they reignited her passion and helped her rediscover a sense of purpose. The season’s spiritual themes resonated deeply with her and provided a fresh perspective during a period of personal transformation.
Throughout Euphoria’s run, the series generated headlines for both its on-screen content and reports surrounding production challenges. Demie acknowledged that the work could be physically and emotionally demanding but said her own experience differed from many of the rumours that circulated online.
She credited Levinson and the production team for listening to her concerns and respecting her boundaries, particularly regarding scenes that made her uncomfortable.
As Euphoria approaches its conclusion, many fans continue to wonder why Demie has not pursued the same career trajectory as some of her co-stars. She rejects the idea that success should follow a single formula.
For Demie, maintaining control over her life and career matters more than chasing fame.
While she remains private about future plans, she made one thing clear: retirement is not on the horizon.
Instead, she appears determined to continue forging her own path, balancing creative ambition with the personal freedom she has worked hard to protect.
