Ageing narcissists become more empathetic, study finds

Research reveals that while narcissistic individuals soften with age, core traits often persist

New research suggests that people with narcissistic traits become more empathetic and agreeable as they age, but they do not completely shed their self-centred nature. Conducted by a team led by Dr Ulrich Orth from the University of Bern, this comprehensive study analyzed data from over 37,000 participants aged eight to 77, aiming to understand how narcissism evolves over time.

The researchers examined 51 previous studies and identified three distinct types of narcissists: agentic, antagonistic, and neurotic. Agentic narcissists crave admiration and feel superior to others, while antagonistic narcissists view others as rivals and often lack empathy. Neurotic narcissists, on the other hand, are insecure and sensitive to criticism. The findings showed that while narcissism scores generally decline with age, the changes are gradual and subtle.

Dr. Orth explained that while some individuals may experience significant change, it is unlikely that a highly narcissistic person will completely transform over the years. He noted that although certain narcissistic traits can initially provide social advantages, such as popularity or career success, they often lead to negative consequences in the long run. These consequences affect not only the narcissists themselves but also their partners, children, friends, and colleagues.

Dr Sarah Davies, a counselling psychologist, highlighted the importance of distinguishing between occasional selfish behaviour and true clinical narcissism. She pointed out that narcissists are often envious, manipulative, and lack a sense of responsibility, further complicating their relationships. The rise of social media has increased interest in narcissism, but it has also blurred the lines between clinical definitions and casual usage of the term.

Additionally, Dr. Tennyson Lee, a consultant psychiatrist, affirmed the study’s significance, emphasizing that while narcissism typically decreases with age, the change is not dramatic. He cautioned against expecting substantial improvements, particularly for those in relationships with narcissistic individuals.

In summary, the study reveals that while ageing may temper some narcissistic behaviours, individuals with these traits often retain core characteristics that can impact their relationships and social interactions.

Analysis

Political Perspective: The findings on narcissism have significant implications for political leadership. Narcissistic traits frequently manifest in individuals pursuing power, potentially resulting in self-serving policies that prioritize personal interests over public welfare. As these leaders age and become more empathetic, there may be opportunities for more collaborative governance. However, the persistence of narcissistic traits raises concerns about manipulation and a lack of accountability, which can hinder political progress.

Social Perspective: This research sheds light on how narcissism influences social dynamics. As awareness of narcissistic behaviours grows, individuals may become more adept at navigating relationships with narcissistic people. Increased public understanding can foster healthier interactions and contribute to a more empathetic society. The study encourages discussions about emotional intelligence and relationship management, promoting a culture that values empathy and self-awareness.

Racial Perspective: Although the study does not specifically address racial issues, the dynamics of narcissism can intersect with race and privilege. In contexts where power disparities exist, individuals from marginalized communities may encounter heightened narcissistic behaviours from those in positions of dominance. Understanding these interactions is essential for addressing systemic inequalities and creating a more equitable society.

Gender Perspective: The expression of narcissism can vary significantly between genders due to societal norms and expectations. Men and women may display narcissistic traits differently, which could influence the way these traits are perceived and addressed in relationships. Recognizing these differences can help tailor support systems for individuals affected by narcissism, ensuring a more nuanced approach to mental health.

Economic Perspective: The persistence of narcissistic behaviours can have economic implications, particularly in workplace environments. Narcissistic leaders may foster toxic cultures that stifle collaboration and innovation, ultimately hindering organizational success. Conversely, as narcissists age and become more agreeable, workplaces could benefit from improved dynamics. Understanding these trends can guide businesses in developing policies that promote healthier work cultures and support employee well-being.

In conclusion, while ageing may soften some narcissistic traits, the study underscores the need for ongoing awareness and intervention. The implications for relationships, workplaces, and broader societal dynamics are significant, warranting further exploration and understanding.
