Tragic van crash in central London claims life of ‘bright and kind’ 20-year-old

Aalia Mahomed, 20, was killed in a fatal van collision near King’s College London, leaving her family devastated

The family of Aalia Mahomed, a 20-year-old woman who lost her life in a van collision in central London, has described her as a “bright, kind, and beautiful soul” who brought joy to those around her.

Emergency services responded to the fatal collision on The Strand near King’s College London’s Aldwych campus at 11:41 am on Tuesday. Despite paramedics’ efforts, Mahomed was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her grieving family expressed their devastation, stating, “She was a ray of sunshine in our lives and will be deeply missed by all her family and friends. Her light will always live on in our memories, and her smile will be our strength as we get through this difficult time.”

Alongside Mahomed, three other pedestrians were injured. A 27-year-old woman remains in serious condition in hospital, though her injuries are not considered life-threatening. A 23-year-old man was also hospitalised but has since been discharged, while another individual was treated at the scene.

The driver of the van, a 26-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. While in custody, he was further arrested on suspicion of drug driving offences. He has since been bailed with conditions while investigations continue. Police have confirmed that the incident is not being treated as terror-related.

The tragedy has deeply affected the local community. King’s College London, located near the crash site, acknowledged the incident and stated it was cooperating with authorities.

Specialist officers are supporting Mahomed’s family, who have requested privacy as they grieve their loss.

As investigations continue, the community mourns a young woman remembered for her warmth, kindness, and infectious smile.
