A major manhunt is underway after Jamie Cooper, 33, escaped from a prison transport van by faking a medical emergency and allegedly overpowering officers.
Cooper, who faces charges of assaulting a police officer and criminal damage, was being transported to Lancaster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning when he managed to flee.
Embed from Getty ImagesThe vehicle was travelling on the M55 motorway near Junction 2 in Catforth, Preston, when officers stopped to respond to Cooper’s claims of a medical crisis at 8:54 am.
The moment the doors opened, Cooper allegedly overpowered the escort officers and made his escape.
Police have warned the public not to approach him but to call 999 immediately if he is seen.
Authorities describe Cooper as:
- 5ft 7ins tall, medium build
- Short, cropped hair
- Last seen wearing a blue coat, blue jeans, and black trainers
- Believed to have links to Blackpool and Bolton
The private security firm GeoAmey, responsible for transporting prisoners, confirmed the escape and stated that a full investigation is underway.
A company spokesperson said: “The detained person involved in this emergency then overpowered and evaded the escort officers and escaped from the vehicle.”
Lancashire Police have assured the public that such incidents are “extremely rare” and that a full-scale search operation is ongoing.
Residents in the area should expect an increased police presence as the hunt for Cooper continues.
