The former England wicketkeeper believes he can add value as England search for their next white-ball captain
Sam Billings has expressed his desire to captain England’s white-ball team, stating he would “jump at an opportunity” to lead England.
Despite not featuring for England since 2022, the 33-year-old boasts an impressive leadership record, guiding Oval Invincibles to consecutive Hundred titles and recently winning the ILT20 with Dubai Capitals.
While Test skipper Ben Stokes and vice-captain Harry Brook remain front-runners to replace Jos Buttler, England’s director of cricket Rob Key has not ruled out an outsider.
“I’ve not had a conversation with anyone, but from a leadership point of view, I’ve loved the success I’ve had,” Billings told BBC Sport.

“You don’t have to reinvent the wheel,” he said. “A balanced side with a few tweaks can get England back on track.”
Meanwhile, Stokes remains an option for ODI captain, but concerns over his fitness—following knee and hamstring surgeries—could impact his availability. Billings acknowledged Stokes’ leadership qualities but suggested Test cricket remains his priority.
“There’s no better captain than Ben Stokes, but his focus should be on the Ashes and India Tests,” he added.
As England looks for a new captain, Sam Billings’ strong leadership record makes him a compelling choice to guide England’s white-ball team.
