Singer calls out ITV after backlash over her sheer outfit at the Brit Awards, saying, “free the nipple”

Charli XCX didn’t just take home multiple Brit Awards—she also took on her critics. The 32-year-old pop star fired back after facing backlash over her daring sheer dress at the ceremony on Saturday, making it clear that she’s not here for outdated fashion policing.

“I’ve heard that ITV were complaining about my nipples,” she revealed, addressing criticism from the British broadcaster. Refusing to apologise, she doubled down: “I feel like we’re in the era of free the nipple, though, right?”

Charli’s defiant stance came during her acceptance speech, where she collected multiple awards, including Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year for her 2024 album Brat. While delivering her speech, she acknowledged the controversy with a smirk, noting, “They put the clap track on, cool. Thanks for being on my side.”

The singer’s bold outfit—a sheer Dilara Findikoglu ensemble paired with a black veil and silver jewellery—was the centre of attention both on and off the red carpet. Photos and videos of her look flooded social media, with fans celebrating her daring fashion choice. However, it also drew criticism, with ITV reportedly expressing concern over the revealing design.

Rather than shy away from the controversy, Charli embraced it. Her response instantly resonated with fans, many of whom praised her for standing up against outdated fashion norms.

Despite the controversy, Charli XCX was the night’s big winner, securing multiple awards and delivering a speech that highlighted both her career struggles and triumphs. Reflecting on her journey, she admitted, “I’ve always felt like an outsider in the industry, but particularly in the British music industry.”

Her success with Brat marked a turning point. “It feels really nice to be recognised on this album when I actually haven’t really made any sacrifices,” she said. “I’ve been doing my own thing in my own corner of the industry for a minute.”

She also took a moment to acknowledge her team and fiancé, George Daniel. “I’ve never really changed, and I’ve worked with the same incredible people,” she shared. “It really takes a whole team, and they’re all sat at that table.”

The backlash against Charli’s outfit quickly turned into an outpouring of support from fans and fellow artists. Many took to social media to defend her right to wear what she wants, arguing that female artists are still unfairly scrutinised for their fashion choices.

Meanwhile, Charli herself remains unfazed. As she continues to celebrate her Brit Awards victories, she’s made one thing clear—she won’t be changing for anyone.
