Omega-3 supplementation found to delay aging by up to four months

A recent study suggests that daily omega-3 intake could slow biological aging by up to four months, with powerful benefits when combined with vitamin D and exercise.

A groundbreaking study published in Nature Aging has revealed that just one gram of omega-3 per day could help slow down biological aging, with the potential to delay the aging process by up to four months. The study, part of the DO-HEALTH trial, involved 777 older adults in Switzerland and utilized advanced DNA methylation techniques to measure biological aging. The findings highlight the significant role omega-3, along with vitamin D and exercise, can play in promoting healthier aging.

The clinical trial, conducted over three years, tested the effects of three interventions—omega-3 supplementation, vitamin D, and a 30-minute exercise routine three times a week—individually and in combination. Researchers found that omega-3 supplementation alone had a moderate impact on slowing biological aging across three out of four epigenetic clocks. The most profound effects were observed when omega-3, vitamin D, and exercise were combined, demonstrating the strongest benefits for reducing cancer risk and preventing frailty over the three years.

The study’s results support previous observations that omega-3 supplementation can have a protective effect on the biological aging process. Interestingly, participants with lower baseline levels of omega-3 showed the most significant epigenetic shifts, underscoring the importance of nutritional interventions for slowing down aging.

Despite the promising findings, the study does have its limitations. It was conducted exclusively with Swiss participants, which may limit its general applicability to a broader population. Additionally, the study only measured biological aging over three years, leaving questions about the long-term effects of these interventions.
