Fans chant for Garnacho, but is this his farewell to Old Trafford

Rumours swirl as Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford face uncertain futures at Manchester United amidst transfer speculation and managerial tactics.

Manchester United edged closer to the Europa League last 16 with a thrilling 2-1 win over Rangers at Old Trafford, but the spotlight wasn’t just on the match—it was on Alejandro Garnacho. As fans chanted his name throughout the game, speculation about his future overshadowed the victory.

The 20-year-old Argentine winger, linked with Chelsea and Napoli, remains a key figure for United, yet his role in head coach Ruben Amorim’s system raises questions. Garnacho, who joined from Atlético Madrid in 2021, has shown promise, scoring eight goals in 32 appearances this season. However, Amorim’s tactical preferences may not fully utilise his strengths as an out-and-out winger.

“We have to be clear on everything,” said Amorim. “He’s improving, but until the window closes, anything can happen.”

United’s financial constraints under Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) add fuel to the speculation. Selling a homegrown player like Garnacho could ease financial pressure, but it risks alienating fans who chanted his name during the match. Reports suggest Chelsea’s bid of around £60m aligns with United’s valuation, but no deal has been confirmed.

Former United star Rio Ferdinand commented: “The system doesn’t suit him. He’s not initiating this move—it’s the club’s situation forcing their hand.”

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford’s future appears equally uncertain. Despite training fully, Rashford was excluded from the squad yet again. Rumours of moves to AC Milan and Barcelona remain stalled, leaving his position unclear.

“Rashford needs a fresh start,” Ferdinand added. “He doesn’t seem to fit Amorim’s plans anymore.”

United’s next home game against Crystal Palace on 1 February, a day before the transfer window closes, could determine the futures of Garnacho and Rashford. Fans are left wondering if they’ve already witnessed Garnacho’s final bow at Old Trafford.
