In a major move to streamline India’s identification system, the Union Cabinet has approved the PAN 2.0 project, ushering in a significant upgrade to the existing Permanent Account Number (PAN) system. This overhaul aims to make PAN a more efficient, secure, and universal identifier for businesses, while also enhancing its role in linking citizens’ financial transactions with government systems.

The PAN system, a 10-digit alphanumeric code issued by the Income Tax Department, has long been a critical tool for tracking individuals’ financial activities in India. Currently, the number is used for income tax purposes but the upcoming upgrade will expand its functionality across a broader range of government services.
