Prime Minister Modi criticises Congress, accusing them of disrespecting parliament and democracy, ahead of the winter session of parliament

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a scathing attack on Congress, accusing the party of disrespecting Parliament and democracy. His comments come just ahead of the start of the winter session of Parliament, where he expressed hope for healthy discussions. In a statement to the media, Modi took aim at opposition parties, particularly Congress, for failing to respect the will of the people and undermining the democratic process.

The Prime Minister emphasised that those who had been repeatedly rejected by voters should not be allowed to disrupt parliamentary proceedings. “Some people who have been rejected by the people are constantly trying to control the Parliament through hooliganism by a handful of people. The people of the country count all their actions and when the time comes, they also punish them,” Modi stated. His remarks came two days after the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), the opposition coalition in Maharashtra, suffered a massive defeat in the state’s assembly elections. The BJP-led Mahayuti coalition secured a decisive victory, winning 235 seats, leaving the MVA with just 49 seats in the 288-member House.

Modi continued, asserting that the opposition parties, especially Congress, neither respected the democratic process nor understood the aspirations of the people. “They have no responsibility towards them, they are unable to understand them, and the result is that they never live up to the expectations of the people,” he said, referring to the continued rejection of Congress at the polls.

In his comments, the Prime Minister also underlined the importance of Parliament, noting that the institution and its members should foster healthy debates in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. He stated that such discussions were crucial to the functioning of a vibrant democracy and encouraged more MPs to contribute constructively to parliamentary discourse.

The winter session of Parliament, which began today, holds particular significance as it marks the 75th year of the Constitution’s adoption. Among the speculated items on the agenda for this session is the introduction of the “One Nation, One Election” bill, a proposal that Modi recently highlighted as a government priority. The session is expected to run until December 20, with key legislative measures, including the Waqf Bill and railway reforms, also expected to be discussed.

With the opposition still reeling from recent electoral setbacks, the winter session promises to be an intense period of political activity, with Modi and the BJP set to push their legislative agenda while continuing their critique of the Congress-led opposition.
