A rare and bizarre incident in pune sees a 40-year-old woman swallowing a 20 cm toothbrush, sparking a national debate on safety during routine activities
In an unusual and shocking incident, a 40-year-old woman in Maharashtra accidentally swallowed an entire 20 cm toothbrush while cleaning her tongue. The event, reported at DY Patil Hospital in Pune, has taken the medical community by surprise, with experts calling it the first case of its kind in the state.
Dr. Abhijeet Karad, the gastroenterologist who treated the woman, remarked, “We were stunned. Swallowing an entire toothbrush is extremely rare, with fewer than 30 cases documented worldwide. Most cases involve psychiatric conditions, but in this instance, the woman was perfectly healthy, making it even more extraordinary.”
The toothbrush, rigid and sharp-edged, could have caused serious internal damage. However, in a remarkable turn of events, the woman managed to avoid any injuries, which doctors described as an “incredible stroke of luck.” Dr. Vinay Thorat, a member of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology, emphasized the gravity of the situation, saying, “Had the toothbrush entered her airway, it could have been life-threatening.”
