With wind speeds reaching up to 120 km/h, evacuation efforts and school closures are underway in anticipation of the cyclone’s landfall on October 25

As Cyclone Dana barrels towards the eastern coast of India, both Odisha and West Bengal are on high alert for landfall, expected in the early hours of October 25. Wind speeds are projected to reach between 100-110 km/h, with gusts potentially hitting 120 km/h. In response to the looming threat, local governments have initiated extensive evacuation plans and implemented precautionary measures to safeguard residents.

In Odisha, authorities are preparing to evacuate over 1 million people from approximately 3,000 villages across 14 districts. Reports indicate that around half of the state’s population could be affected by the cyclone. The government has established relief camps to accommodate evacuees, ensuring they have access to essential supplies and safety from the storm.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also expressed confidence in the state’s preparedness, stating that her government is ready to face the challenges posed by Cyclone Dana. Educational institutions in both states will remain closed to protect students and staff, while residents in vulnerable areas are being urged to evacuate to safer locations.

The East Coast Railways has announced the cancellation of 198 trains, impacting services through and originating from Odisha. Notably, Train No. 06087, the Tirunelveli Junction – Shalimar Special, scheduled for October 24, has been called off. The cancellations are part of broader safety measures aimed at minimising risks to passengers during the cyclone’s approach.

Local officials, including MLA Manas Kumar Dutta, have been actively engaging with fishermen and coastal communities to assess conditions and promote safety measures ahead of the storm. Their efforts underscore the urgency of the situation as communities brace for the impending cyclone.

As Cyclone Dana approaches, residents are advised to stay informed through official channels, heed evacuation orders, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Updates on the cyclone’s path and government advisories will be crucial in the coming days.
