New Delhi expresses outrage over Pakistan’s reception of controversial preacher Zakir Naik while pursuing his extradition from Malaysia

India has reacted strongly to Pakistan’s recent warm welcome extended to fugitive Islamic preacher Zakir Naik. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) voiced its disappointment, emphasising that while the gesture is condemnable, it is not unexpected.

The MEA spokesperson stated, “It is disappointing and condemnable, but as I said, not surprising,” during a press conference. This statement follows Naik’s high-profile arrival in Pakistan, which has sparked outrage among Indian authorities and the public. India seeks Naik’s extradition due to serious allegations of money laundering and inciting extremism through hate speech.

Naik fled India in 2016 and was granted permanent residency in Malaysia by the previous government led by Mahathir Mohamad. Since then, he has been a controversial figure, with Indian authorities keen to bring him to justice. India has made a formal extradition request to the Malaysian government, a matter discussed during Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s recent visit to New Delhi. The MEA reiterated its commitment to pursuing this request, stating, “We are actively seeking his return to face justice in India.”

The hosting of Naik in Pakistan complicates the already tense relations between India and its neighbour. Indian officials have condemned his presence as a direct challenge to efforts aimed at combating terrorism and extremism. The MEA’s response reflects the broader concern regarding the safety and security of Indian citizens, especially given the serious nature of the allegations against Naik.

Zakir Naik’s past is marred by controversy. He gained notoriety for his incendiary speeches that promoted radical ideologies, leading Indian authorities to classify him as a significant threat to national security. His arrival in Pakistan raises questions about the country’s approach to managing individuals with extremist views.

As the Indian government pursues Naik’s extradition, it faces the challenge of navigating complex diplomatic waters. The situation underscores the need for international cooperation in combating terrorism, a matter that has become increasingly urgent in recent years.

While Pakistan has remained largely silent on the criticism, it has focused on its internal policies and the welcome it extended to Naik. The Indian government’s strong condemnation serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced in addressing the issues of extremism and international fugitive management.

In the face of mounting tensions, India continues to advocate for a robust approach to countering extremism, with officials urging the international community to take a stand against individuals who incite violence and hatred. The developments surrounding Zakir Naik’s presence in Pakistan will likely continue to be a point of contention between the two nations.

As India pushes forward with its efforts for Naik’s extradition, the outcome of this diplomatic pursuit remains uncertain. Indian authorities are determined to bring Naik to justice, viewing it as a critical step in their ongoing fight against extremism.
