Canadian authorities continue to probe the possible involvement of the Indian government in the killing of Khalistani separatist
In a significant development in the investigation of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s murder, Canadian police have arrested three men. The suspects, identified as Karanpreet Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karan Brar, were apprehended on charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy. This case has garnered extensive attention due to the diplomatic tensions it sparked between Canada and India.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent figure in the Khalistani movement, was fatally shot outside a gurdwara in Surrey, Canada. His assassination not only shocked the community but also led to serious allegations from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who implicated the Indian government in the killing. India, however, has vehemently denied these claims, calling them “absurd” and a misrepresentation.
During a press conference, RCMP Superintendent Mandeep Mooker revealed that the investigation was exploring potential links between the arrested individuals and the Indian government. This angle remains a critical aspect of the ongoing inquiry, as noted by Assistant RCMP Commissioner David Teboul, who emphasized that the investigation was far from over.
“The arrests made in Edmonton, Alberta, do not conclude our efforts. We are aware of the possibility of other individuals involved in this heinous act, and our teams are dedicated to bringing each one to justice,” Teboul stated. He also mentioned that ongoing separate investigations might uncover ties to the Indian government, which adds a layer of complexity to the case.
The three suspects, all Indian nationals, were residing in Canada on non-permanent resident permits at the time of their arrest. The Canadian authorities are now in talks with their Indian counterparts to delve deeper into the suspects’ backgrounds and possible motives.
The murder of Nijjar had previously led Canada to accuse India of meddling in its internal affairs, prompting a diplomatic spat that resulted in India demanding the withdrawal of a significant number of Canadian diplomats from its soil.
As this investigation continues, both nations remain on alert, with Canada seeking concrete evidence to support its claims and India defending its position against the allegations. This case not only highlights the complexities of international relations but also underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding the Khalistani separatist movement.
