As ‘Young Sheldon’ nears its series finale, star Annie Potts expresses shock and disappointment over the decision to end the popular sitcom.
Annie Potts, renowned for her role as Meemaw in ‘Young Sheldon,’ has openly criticized CBS’s decision to conclude the show after its seventh season. In a recent interview with Variety, Potts expressed her bewilderment and frustration, labelling the move to cancel the top-rated series as “stupid” from a business perspective.
“I was shocked,” Potts revealed, reflecting on the unexpected announcement. “It just seemed like such a stupid business move. We were the number one show on network TV and very popular on Netflix. How could they end something that continues to capture so much attention?”
‘Young Sheldon’ has enjoyed immense popularity, consistently ranking as TV’s most-watched comedy, albeit trailing behind ‘Ghosts’ in the 18-49 demographic. Despite these strong ratings, CBS and the show’s creators believe that the storyline has reached a logical endpoint. The series follows Sheldon Cooper’s early years in Medford, Texas, and is set to conclude as the character prepares to move to Pasadena, California, for graduate studies at the California Institute of Technology.
Chuck Lorre, co-creator of the series, explained on The Hollywood Reporter’s TV’s Top 5 podcast that the storyline aligns with the established timeline of ‘The Big Bang Theory.’ “The story we wanted to tell is complete,” Lorre stated. “Sheldon’s future adventures at CalTech are beyond the scope of this show.”
Despite this rationale, Potts remains unconvinced and concerned about the decision’s impact on the cast and crew, as well as the fans who have remained loyal throughout the series. “This cancellation was especially hard because I was completely unprepared. We were totally ambushed by this decision,” she added.
The finale of ‘Young Sheldon’ is slated to air on May 16 and will feature cameos by Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik, who reprise their roles as Sheldon Cooper and Amy Farrah Fowler. Following the conclusion of ‘Young Sheldon,’ CBS plans to continue the Big Bang franchise with two spinoffs, including a show focusing on Sheldon’s brother Georgie.
