The eventing community mourns the loss of Caroline March at 31
The equestrian world is in mourning following the tragic passing of Caroline March, a distinguished former four-star event rider, on 23 March 2024. At the young age of 31, Caroline’s death left a void in the hearts of many who admired her talent, determination, and bravery.
Caroline March, known for her exceptional skills in the saddle, had achieved remarkable success in the demanding discipline of eventing. Competing at prestigious events like Blenheim, Chatsworth, and Gatcombe, she exemplified the spirit and dedication required at the highest levels of the sport. Her notable performance on Postmaster at Blenheim in 2017, achieving a clear round across the country, remains a testament to her skill and partnership with her horses.
However, Caroline’s promising career took a devastating turn in April 2022, following a severe spinal injury incurred during a cross-country fall. This life-altering event led Caroline to make a profoundly personal decision regarding her future. In a heartfelt letter shared posthumously on her Facebook page, Caroline expressed her reasons, offering insight into her courageous journey and the choices she faced.
The eventing community, while grappling with this immense loss, has come together to honour Caroline’s memory. Piggy March, a fellow eventer and Caroline’s sister-in-law reflected on the profound impact of Caroline’s decision and her enduring bravery. “She was determined to do this… and there was NOTHING anyone was going to do to stop her,” Piggy stated, emphasizing Caroline’s resolve and the family’s hope for her peace.
British Eventing (BE) and the British Eventing Support Trust also paid tribute to Caroline, acknowledging her significant contributions to the sport and the close-knit nature of the eventing family. Recognizing the challenges faced by individuals with life-changing injuries, they extended their deepest sympathies to Caroline’s family and friends during this incredibly challenging time.
Caroline March’s legacy will undoubtedly live on through the memories of her achievements and the lives she touched. Her story is a poignant reminder of the courage it takes to face unimaginable challenges head-on.
