Despite efforts, the 107-pound loggerhead succumbs to Debilitated Turtle Syndrome

In a sorrowful turn of events, the Gulfarium CARE Center in Florida announced the passing of Nickel, a 107-pound subadult loggerhead sea turtle. Found washed ashore on Pensacola Beach on Saturday, Nickel was battling Debilitated Turtle Syndrome (DTS), a condition that left him emaciated, hypoglycemic, and anaemic.

Despite the immediate care provided by the Gulfarium CARE Center, Nickel could not overcome the severe effects of DTS. According to the centre, even after conducting crucial blood tests to measure packed cell volume (PCV) and protein levels—key indicators of health in sea turtles—Nickel’s condition remained critical. “A healthy loggerhead typically shows PCV levels of 30-40% and protein levels between 4-5. Tragically, Nickel’s PCV ranged from 7-12% and his protein was only 2,” the CARE Center revealed, highlighting the severity of Nickel’s condition.

DTS affects a significant portion of the sea turtle population, with over 50% of those diagnosed not surviving. The syndrome’s cause remains a mystery, complicating efforts to prevent and treat affected turtles effectively.

Nickel’s story is a stark reminder of the challenges facing marine wildlife and the importance of ongoing research and conservation efforts. The Gulfarium CARE Center remains dedicated to the care and study of marine animals, hoping to unlock the secrets of DTS and other threats to sea turtles’ survival.
