Idaho’s surprising law: No sex before marriage

The state of Idaho maintains a law prohibiting sex outside of marriage, with potential fines and imprisonment for offenders

In an unexpected twist of law, the state of Idaho in the United States still enforces a rule that makes it illegal for unmarried individuals to engage in sexual intercourse. This law, which seems more fitting for a bygone era, is outlined in Idaho’s Code and Statutes of 2017 under the ‘Sex Crimes’ chapter.

According to the statute, any unmarried person found to have sexual relations with another unmarried person of the opposite sex could face a fine of up to $300 or imprisonment for up to six months, or both. The court has the discretion to suspend the sentence, with or without probation.

This law raises eyebrows, especially considering the modern societal norms around relationships and sexual activity. It’s a stark reminder that in some parts of the world, legal systems still hold onto traditional values that might not align with contemporary views.

Interestingly, Idaho’s approach to sex education in schools is also influenced by this conservative stance. Although sex education is not mandatory in the state, schools that choose to offer it are required to promote abstinence. A recent bill further clarified this by defining abstinence as the complete absence of sexual activity before marriage, including any physical contact that could lead to pregnancy, transmit sexually transmitted diseases, or pose emotional risks.

The law and the educational guidelines reflect a strong emphasis on abstinence and traditional values regarding relationships and sexuality in Idaho. As the world evolves and attitudes towards sex and relationships continue to shift, it remains to be seen how long such laws will remain in place and how they will impact the lives of the state’s residents.
