Family mourns the loss of 25-year-old Zamra Hughes, emphasizing the importance of road safety

In a heart-wrenching incident on I-94 in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, the local community mourns the tragic loss of 25-year-old Zamra Hughes, a Milwaukee woman and mother of two, following a fatal rollover crash on Wednesday, March 13. Known affectionately as “Muffin” to her family, Hughes’s untimely death has left her loved ones in deep sorrow, questioning the circumstances that led to the accident.

Hughes, who had just finished her workday in Oak Creek, was on her way to celebrate her sister’s birthday when the devastating crash occurred. The Oak Creek Fire Department reported that the accident happened around 5:15 p.m., resulting in Hughes being ejected from her vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The image of the wrecked car has deeply affected the family, with Hughes’s grandmother expressing disbelief and grief over the loss.

Speed is believed to be a contributing factor to the crash, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office. The family, desperate for answers, seeks clarity and information about the events that led to this tragedy. They emphasize the need for closure, especially for Hughes’s young sons, who are now left without their mother.

In response to the accident, a GoFundMe page has been established to support Hughes’s children during this difficult time. Meanwhile, another vehicle involved was found a quarter mile down the road from the crash site; however, its driver refused medical treatment. The northbound lanes of I-94 were temporarily closed at Drexel Avenue as authorities investigated the scene.

Zamuria Hughes, one of Zamra’s younger twin sisters, shared her profound grief, noting the poignant timing of the crash on her birthday. She expressed a powerful message about the fragility of life and the importance of cautious driving: “Don’t ever think it can’t be you. Slow down.”

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash, seeking to understand the sequence of events that led to this tragic outcome. As the community and the Hughes family grapple with this loss, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of unsafe driving behaviours.
