The mysterious death of Charlie Saywell: A night out turns fatal
The quiet town of Chatham, Kent, is grappling with the mysterious death of 25-year-old soldier Charlie Saywell, whose body was discovered in the River Medway on March 5. The serviceman’s tragic end has left the community and his family seeking answers, as police delve into the events that led to his untimely demise.
Charlie Saywell, a young soldier full of life, had been enjoying an evening out with friends in Brompton before deciding to venture into Chatham town centre alone. His journey took him past the Primark on Chatham High Street and into a fast-food outlet, dressed in a dark navy short-sleeved t-shirt, khaki cargo trousers, and white trainers.

The circumstances surrounding how he ended up in the River Medway, near Main Gate Road, remain unclear, and his death is currently not being treated as suspicious.
Detective Sergeant Karen Caulfield has made a public appeal for information, urging anyone who may have seen Charlie in the Gillingham and Chatham areas between 12:10 am and 2:40 am to come forward. The police are particularly interested in speaking with witnesses who may have seen him at the fast-food outlet or involved in an altercation near a car.
Charlie’s mother, Victoria Brown, has joined the appeal, asking anyone with even the smallest piece of information to contact Kent Police. The community’s support has been overwhelming, with Charlie’s friend Joe setting up a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral costs, a testament to the impact Charlie had on those around him.
As the investigation continues, the memory of Charlie Saywell remains alive in the hearts of his loved ones, who are determined to uncover the truth behind his tragic end.
