Spartans miss crucial chances in loss to Hawkeyes
In a gripping encounter at the Breslin Center, Michigan State’s basketball (MSU) team faced a tough defeat against Iowa, ending with a score of 78-71. The game, filled with missed opportunities for the Spartans, saw them struggling with layups and passes, ultimately costing them the match.

MSU’s coach, Tom Izzo, expressed disappointment over the team’s inability to defend the interior, with Iowa outscoring MSU 40-28 in the paint. This, coupled with the Spartans’ 17 missed shots in the paint, was a decisive factor in the game’s outcome. “They absolutely killed every one of our post guys,” Izzo remarked, highlighting the need for a strategic rethink.
Despite Tyson Walker’s 16 points and Malik Hall’s 17 points with 10 rebounds, the Spartans couldn’t overcome Iowa’s dominance inside. A.J. Hoggard, who scored all of his 15 points in the second half, reflected on the defensive lapses that allowed Iowa to maintain their lead.
Iowa’s strategy to target MSU’s interior defence paid dividends, with Payton Sandfort and Ben Krikke leading the charge for the Hawkeyes. Sandfort’s 22 points and Krikke’s double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds underscored a well-executed plan by Iowa to exploit the Spartans’ weaknesses.
The loss adds to Michigan State’s challenges in the Big Ten, as they move to a 17-10 overall record and 9-7 in the conference. The Spartans look to regroup and refocus their efforts as they prepare to host Ohio State in their next game.
