Investigation launched as woman dies from dairy traces in ‘Vegan’ tiramisu.

An Italian pastry shop is under investigation for manslaughter following the tragic death of 20-year-old Anna Bellisario, who suffered a fatal allergic reaction after consuming what she believed to be a vegan tiramisu at a restaurant in Milan. Anna, who had extreme dairy and egg allergies, had sought reassurance from staff and checked the label before taking just two mouthfuls of the dessert.

Despite reassurances, Anna went into anaphylactic shock and passed away on February 5, 2023. Investigations revealed that the ‘vegan’ tiramisu and a vegan sandwich she consumed both contained traces of milk and egg, leading to a nationwide recall of products from 63 restaurants across Italy.

The two women who own the pastry shop, accused of mixing up invoices and neglecting the separation of vegan and non-vegan production lines, are now facing manslaughter charges. The investigating judge, Fiammetta Modica, expressed concern over the “worrying picture of unscrupulousness” and ordered a ban on all entrepreneurial activity for the mother-daughter duo. The judge highlighted the role of ‘entrepreneurial chaos’ in the tragedy and emphasized the importance of ingredient separation, proper training, and adherence to safety protocols to prevent such incidents.

Employees reportedly underwent only a four-hour course instead of comprehensive training, raising questions about the adequacy of preparation and awareness in handling food allergies. The case sheds light on the critical importance of stringent measures in food establishments to safeguard customers with allergies and prevent potentially fatal consequences.
