Defendant Deobra Delone Redden speaks out following courtroom assault

The felon captured on video hurling himself at a Las Vegas judge has broken his silence, providing insights into the shocking incident that unfolded during his sentencing at the Regional Justice Center.

Defendant Deobra Delone Redden was set to be sentenced by District Judge Mary Kay Holthus on Wednesday after pleading guilty to attempted battery causing substantial bodily harm in November 2023. Seeking leniency, Redden faced disappointment as Judge Holthus denied probation and hinted at incarceration due to his previous offences.

In a disturbing turn of events, Redden charged towards the judge, shouting expletives and attacking her. Video footage of the incident quickly went viral, depicting a chaotic scene in the courtroom as officers and court officials rushed to restrain him.

Detained by officials, Redden now faces multiple new felony charges, including battery on a protected person. From inside a holding cell near the courtroom, he allegedly told an officer that the judge “has it out for [him]” and branded her as “evil.”

According to court documents, Redden slammed Judge Holthus’ head against the wall, struck her in the head, and pulled out part of her hair during the altercation. Despite initial care at the justice centre, the judge later went to the hospital due to persistent pain.

Reflecting on the unprecedented incident, Clark County Chief Judge Jerry Wiese stated, “This is a very unique situation, that as far as I know never happened before, with somebody Supermanning over a judicial bench.”

Judge Holthus, still recovering from the assault, remains sore and stiff but expressed gratitude that the situation was not more severe. In addition to the judge, marshal Shane Brandon required 25 stitches for a cut on his face, and law clerk Michael Lasso sustained minor hand abrasions.
