Max Verstappen has ended exit speculation by signing a Red Bull deal until 2030

Max Verstappen has signed a new Red Bull contract that will keep him with the team until the end of 2030.

The four-time Formula 1 world champion had previously been tied to Red Bull until the end of 2028, but clauses in his deal meant he could have left at the end of the current season if he wanted to.

That had fuelled speculation about a possible move to Mercedes or McLaren, especially during a difficult period for Red Bull. The new agreement should quiet much of that talk, at least for now.

The Verstappen contract extension is a major boost for Red Bull at a time when the team is trying to return to the front under new regulations for cars and engines.

Verstappen said Red Bull felt like a second family and that he was excited to keep working with the people at the team. He said the ultimate goal remained getting back to the top and fighting for more wins and championships.

The Dutch driver joined Red Bull’s junior team, then called Toro Rosso, in 2015. He was promoted to the senior Red Bull team early in the 2016 season and won his first race immediately.

Since then, Verstappen has become one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history. He has won 71 grands prix and four world titles, putting him third on the all-time wins list behind Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher.

But this season has not been easy. Red Bull have struggled under the new technical rules, and Verstappen’s best results so far have been second-place finishes in Austria and Hungary.

That dip in performance followed a tense 2025 season, when Verstappen came within two points of beating McLaren’s Lando Norris to the world title after a dramatic fightback from more than 100 points behind.

Red Bull’s recent lack of pace has clearly frustrated Verstappen. At different points, he has been open about his dissatisfaction with the car and the direction of the sport.

Despite that, he has chosen to stay with the team that has defined his Formula 1 career.

The decision comes even though Verstappen’s trusted race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase has agreed to join McLaren by 2028. His departure will be a major change for Verstappen, given how central their partnership has been to Red Bull’s success.

Verstappen also praised team principal Laurent Mekies, who took over last July after Christian Horner was sacked following a turbulent period for the team. Verstappen said Mekies had a clear vision and that people at Red Bull’s Milton Keynes base believed in what they were building.

The timing of the announcement is symbolic. It comes ahead of Verstappen’s final home race at Zandvoort before the Dutch Grand Prix drops off the calendar.

Red Bull team principal Mekies described the new deal as fantastic news and called Verstappen the best driver on the grid. He said the relationship between Verstappen and Red Bull had become one of Formula 1’s great success stories.

Although the contract runs until 2030, Verstappen’s future may not be completely settled forever. F1 driver contracts often include performance-related mechanisms that can allow a driver to leave if expectations are not met.

The details of those clauses have not been made public, and teams rarely discuss the fine print of contracts.

Still, Verstappen’s decision is a clear statement of faith in Red Bull. It shows that, despite frustrations with the current car and concerns about the sport’s new engine rules, he believes the team can recover.

For Red Bull, keeping Verstappen matters more than any other signing. He remains their strongest asset, their clearest route back to regular victories and the driver around whom their future will continue to be built.

For Formula 1, the message is just as important: Verstappen is staying, Red Bull have their champion, and the next chapter of one of the sport’s defining partnerships is now locked in.
