Chelsea transfer targets Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson have emerged as surprise options as Xabi Alonso looks to reshape his squad before the new season. The Blues are exploring moves for the experienced Premier League duo in what appears to be a shift away from their recent youth-focused recruitment strategy.
Chelsea are understood to be in talks over a deal for Welbeck, the 35-year-old Brighton striker who scored 13 goals in 37 Premier League appearances last season. While his age makes the potential move unexpected, his experience, consistent performances and leadership qualities are believed to appeal to Alonso.
Welbeck signed a one-year contract extension with Brighton in March, leaving him with 12 months remaining on his deal. Brighton are reportedly open to offers if the right proposal arrives, with optimism growing that an agreement could be reached this summer.
Jordan Henderson has also joined the list of Chelsea transfer targets. The 36-year-old Brentford midfielder and former Liverpool captain has one year left on his contract, but reports suggest Brentford would allow him to leave on a free transfer.
Chelsea’s interest in Henderson signals a possible change in transfer strategy. After several seasons focused on signing young players with long-term potential, the club now appears eager to bring in experienced professionals who can provide leadership, composure and guidance in the dressing room.
Henderson made 34 appearances for Brentford last season and was included in England’s World Cup squad. He also suffered a broken arm after falling over advertising hoardings while celebrating England’s victory over Mexico.
Welbeck’s arrival would increase competition in Chelsea’s attack. João Pedro, Liam Delap and Nicolas Jackson are already competing for places, and another striker could leave one of the club’s current forwards facing an uncertain future.
João Pedro impressed during his first season at Stamford Bridge, scoring 15 Premier League goals to establish himself as Chelsea’s first-choice striker. Delap, meanwhile, endured a difficult debut campaign after his £30 million move from Ipswich and had been expected to receive more time to develop.
A move for Welbeck could change those plans. Jackson’s future also remains unclear after spending last season on loan at Bayern Munich, while Aston Villa have reportedly shown interest in the forward.
For Welbeck, a switch to Chelsea would continue the growing transfer pipeline between Brighton and Stamford Bridge. Robert Sánchez, Moisés Caicedo and João Pedro have all completed the same move in recent years.
The veteran striker also enjoyed success against Chelsea last season, scoring twice in Brighton’s 3-1 victory at Stamford Bridge. That display may have reinforced Chelsea’s belief that he can still perform at the highest level.
Henderson would offer something different. Although Chelsea possess plenty of young talent in midfield, Alonso may value an experienced figure capable of leading the squad through the demands of a long Premier League campaign and challenging matches.
Neither transfer has been completed, but Chelsea’s interest in Welbeck and Henderson suggests a clear change in direction. Rather than focusing solely on youth and future resale value, the club appears increasingly willing to prioritise proven Premier League experience.
If both deals are completed, they may not be the most eye-catching signings of the summer. However, they could prove to be practical additions, giving Chelsea the leadership, reliability and balance needed as Alonso begins shaping his squad for the new season.
