Washington joins calls for accountability as scrutiny intensifies over police actions

The murder of Henry Nowak has triggered an escalating political dispute on both sides of the Atlantic after the White House publicly criticised what it described as “two tier policing” in the United Kingdom.

In a highly unusual intervention, the US State Department issued a statement expressing condolences to Nowak’s family while linking the case to broader concerns about policing and social policy across Western nations.

The statement described ideological conditioning and two tier policing as symptoms of what it called civilisational decline and argued that such practices should be rejected throughout the West.

The comments are likely to deepen tensions between the administration of Donald Trump and the government of Keir Starmer.

The case has already become a major political flashpoint in Britain.

Nowak, an 18 year old university student, was fatally stabbed in Southampton. The incident generated national outrage after body worn camera footage appeared to show officers arresting and handcuffing him while he lay critically injured.

His attacker, identified as Vickrum Digwa, reportedly claimed he had been subjected to racial abuse. The circumstances surrounding the police response have since become the focus of intense public and political scrutiny.

On Thursday, Kemi Badenoch met members of Nowak’s family, including his father Mark Nowak, mother Lucy Ross and stepmother Katie Woodcock.

Following the meeting, Badenoch said the family wanted to see a return to what they described as common sense policing and stressed the importance of rebuilding public trust in law enforcement.

She praised the family’s courage and said they had endured an unimaginable loss. According to Badenoch, the family hopes Henry’s memory can help unite communities rather than deepen divisions.

She also pledged to help create a positive legacy in his name.

Several hours later, the family met Starmer at Downing Street.

Afterwards, the Prime Minister acknowledged that difficult questions remained regarding the police handling of the incident. He said authorities would take whatever action proved necessary to address failures and ensure lessons were learned.

Starmer added that honouring Henry’s memory required pursuing accountability while choosing unity over hatred and division.

Meanwhile, political arguments surrounding policing policies have intensified.

Richard Tice accused the government of ignoring concerns raised by the case, while debate has continued over the concept of two tier policing.

The controversy has also drawn the attention of businessman Elon Musk, who reportedly offered to support a private prosecution against Hampshire Police. Starmer has previously criticised Musk for comments he believes risk increasing social tensions.

The case is now subject to multiple investigations.

The inquest into Henry Nowak’s death will examine whether any action or omission by police officers contributed to the outcome. Proceedings are expected to take place before a jury.

At the same time, the Independent Office for Police Misconduct is investigating whether officers breached professional standards.

A separate inspection has also been proposed into the culture and performance of Hampshire Police following a request from the county’s police and crime commissioner.

Broader questions about policing policy have emerged as part of the debate.

Critics have pointed to guidance issued under the National Police Chiefs’ Council race action plan, which encouraged officers not to adopt a colour blind approach when dealing with communities.

Supporters argue such policies are intended to address inequalities and improve trust. Opponents contend they risk undermining equal treatment under the law.

As investigations continue, the death of Henry Nowak remains at the centre of a wider national conversation about policing, accountability and public confidence.

With political pressure growing and international attention now focused on the case, the coming months are likely to bring further scrutiny of both police actions and broader law enforcement policies.
