Future king under pressure over faith as aide defends his beliefs

Prince William says he will take church duty seriously despite his quiet faith

Prince William has reaffirmed his commitment to the Church of England, with aides saying he understands his duty despite not attending church regularly.

The Prince of Wales, who was confirmed at the age of 14, is expected to become the future supreme governor of the Church of England, a role traditionally held by the British monarch.

According to an aide, William has a “quiet” personal faith but intends to build “a strong and meaningful bond with the Church and its leadership”.

The comments come amid questions about his level of religious observance compared to previous generations of the Royal Family.

His approach to faith is seen as different from that of his father, King Charles III, and his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, both of whom were known for their regular church attendance and public expressions of belief.

Speaking ahead of William’s planned attendance at the installation of Dame Sarah Mullally as Archbishop of Canterbury, the aide outlined the Prince’s perspective on religion and duty.

“His feeling is that I might not be at church every day, but I believe in it, I want to support it, and this is an important aspect of my role and the next role, and I will take it very seriously, in my own way,” the aide said.

The source added that William’s appearance at Canterbury Cathedral would serve as a clear signal of his position.

“This week is an opportunity to be very clear in people’s minds, when he walks into Canterbury Cathedral, where he stands,” the aide said.

The remarks were described as an effort to address public uncertainty about his commitment to the Church.

Aides suggested that William’s faith may not always be fully understood because of its more private nature.

“The Prince of Wales’s commitment to the Church of England is sometimes quieter than people expect, and for that reason it is not always fully understood,” the source said.

They added that those close to him recognise his connection to the Church as being personal and sincere.

The aide emphasised that William views the Church as more than a cultural institution, describing it as a living expression of faith rooted in compassion and belief.

Looking ahead, the Prince is said to be preparing for the responsibilities he will one day assume, including his role within the Church.

He is expected to approach the position in a way that respects tradition while also reflecting modern Britain.

The aide said William aims to ensure that institutions remain relevant and connected to the public they serve.

The discussion around faith also comes amid broader changes within the Royal Family.

It has previously been reported that the Princess of Wales has shown increased interest in religion following her cancer diagnosis in 2024.

She is said to have developed a different perspective on faith during her recovery.

For Prince William, the focus remains on balancing personal belief with the responsibilities that come with his future role.
