Trailer reveals Paul Atreides’ descent as war erupts in Dune’s final chapter
The first trailer for Dune: Part Three has been released, offering a dramatic look at the final chapter of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi saga.
The film sees Timothée Chalamet return as Paul Atreides, with the story continuing from the events of the previous instalments and moving into darker territory as conflict spreads across the galaxy.
While the first two films largely followed Herbert’s original novel Dune, the third instalment adapts the sequel Dune Messiah, focusing on the consequences of Paul’s rise to power.
The trailer suggests a shift in tone, with Paul’s character becoming more intense as he faces the impact of decisions that could lead to widespread destruction.
At the end of the previous film, Paul had overthrown the Harkonnens and taken control on Arrakis. He also agreed to marry Princess Irulan, played by Florence Pugh, a decision that strained his relationship with Chani, portrayed by Zendaya.
The trailer revisits those developments and builds on them, showing the growing tension between personal relationships and political ambition.
It also hints at Paul’s visions of the future, which point towards a path that could result in millions of deaths.
New footage shows Paul leading large groups of fighters and standing before vast armies, suggesting the scale of the conflict to come.
Scenes in the trailer include images of battle-scarred environments and a bloodied Paul moving across scorched terrain, reinforcing the sense of an escalating war.
The film introduces further developments in the story, including references to Paul and Chani’s children.
A significant time jump is also confirmed, with the narrative moving forward by 17 years.
This allows for the introduction of new character dynamics, including a larger role for Paul’s sister Alia, played by Anya Taylor-Joy.
Alia was only briefly seen in the previous film, but the trailer indicates she will now play a more prominent role in the story.
The cast also expands with Robert Pattinson appearing as Scytale, presented with a distinctive new look.
Jason Momoa’s character Duncan Idaho also appears in the trailer, suggesting his return to the story despite previous events.
Alongside these characters, the film continues to feature the large-scale production design and world-building that have defined the series so far.
The trailer highlights sweeping landscapes, detailed environments and large battle sequences, maintaining the visual style established in the earlier films.
Villeneuve’s adaptation has been widely recognised for its scale and cinematic approach, and the final instalment appears set to continue that direction.
The film is positioned as the conclusion to the director’s interpretation of Herbert’s work, bringing together storylines that have developed across the previous two films.
With its focus on power, conflict and consequence, Dune: Part Three aims to close the narrative arc of Paul Atreides as his journey reaches its final stage.
The film is scheduled to be released in cinemas on 18 December.
