Nicolas Cage stars as a 1930s detective superhero in Prime Video’s Spider-Noir
Nicolas Cage has officially swung into live-action as Spider-Noir, with Prime Video unveiling the first teaser trailer for the highly anticipated Spider-Verse spin-off series.
The new show, titled Spider-Noir, places Cage at the centre of a dark, stylised 1930s New York, where he plays Ben Reilly, also known as “The Spider”. The character first captured audiences in animated form when Cage voiced Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Now, he brings the trench coat-wearing vigilante fully into the flesh-and-blood world.
In the series, Reilly is described as “a seasoned, down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life, following a deeply personal tragedy, as the city’s one and only superhero.” The premise blends classic noir detective drama with superhero spectacle, positioning Cage’s character as both gumshoe and masked crime-fighter.
Prime Video has released two versions of the teaser trailer: an “Authentic Black & White” edition and a “True-Hue Full Colour” version. The dual release highlights the show’s striking visual identity, leaning heavily into the shadow-soaked aesthetic that made the animated Spider-Man Noir such a fan favourite.
Cage appears fully committed to the role, embracing the brooding tone and hard-boiled atmosphere that define the character. The teaser suggests a gritty world of crime, mystery and moral reckoning, with Reilly balancing personal demons alongside his responsibilities as the city’s only superhero.
The live-action series expands the Spider-Verse beyond animation, allowing audiences to explore more of this particular universe. Since Cage’s standout voice performance in Into the Spider-Verse, fans have called for more time in the noir-infused corner of the multiverse. With Spider-Noir, that wish becomes reality.
The cast extends well beyond Cage. The series also stars Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson. Behind the camera, the project brings together an experienced creative team. Fleabag director Harry Bradbeer directs, while Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot serve as showrunners. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who helped shape the animated Spider-Verse films, join as executive producers alongside Amy Pascal.
The involvement of Lord and Miller signals continuity with the wider Spider-Verse brand, even as the show carves out its own stylistic path. By setting the action in 1930s New York and grounding it in detective storytelling, the series distinguishes itself from more conventional superhero fare.
Prime Video has confirmed that Spider-Noir will premiere on 27 May this year. All episodes will drop simultaneously, with both colour and monochrome editions available at launch. Viewers will have the option to experience the series in full black-and-white or in its colour presentation.
The timing places the series firmly within the expanding Spider-Verse timeline, arriving ahead of Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse, which is scheduled to reach cinemas in summer 2027.
For now, the teaser makes one thing clear: Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Noir is stepping out of animation and into a rain-soaked, shadow-drenched live-action world, and he is not holding back.
